Black Mountain Backpacking Trip Reflection

Black Mountain

Once I heard about the trip, I got excited. I love the out doors and love to camp. Even thought I have only gone backpacking one other time in Oregon, I was excited. I enjoy nature and all that it has to offer, especially the animals. Getting back to the trip, the car ride up to the tail wasn't bad, other than the sharp turns it was relaxing looking out the window.

Once we arrived there and got out of the vans, I knew I was going to be sweaty after the hike. It must have been around eighty five, a bit hot for this Oregonian. But never-the-less it felt good. The walk itself wasn't bad, it was just the heat that made it uncomfortable. It was fun talking to Bree, Lindsay, and Misa. We talked about whatever came to mind, anything from where everybody was from, to talking about wether or not that we liked certain foods. Once we got to the hilly part, oh boy, that was the worst part. I felt the strain of the backpack and all its weight on my lower back and felt my caves and hamstrings burn. It also didn't help that my left knee is messed up, so after walking a while it started to hurt, so I took some pain meds that I brought will me. After I took the medicine at the second rest stop at the grave road, my knee felt so much better.

After getting to the camp site, and passing that terrible smelling outhouse, I put down my backpack and just sat down. Felling relived that we made it and that I could just now relax. About after five minutes of relaxing, I stared to unpack and set up my tent. Setting up the tent was pretty easy, and I was done within minutes. After that other people where having trouble setting up there tents, so when they asked me, I helped them. And apparently I was the person to go to, mostly everyone asked me for help with there tent, maybe it's because I'm from Oregon. So when people, especially Californians, here that I'm from Oregon they assume that I am an expert in the outdoors and a lumberjack or a mountain man. I don't know why people think of Oregonians this way, but they are far fetched. Owe well, I don't rely care.

When I went to bed, I fell asleep pretty fast due to the two mile hike uphill. Maybe after two or three hours of sleeping, I was woken up by I'm pretty sure raccoons, or opossums. I stayed awake for about fifteen minutes listening to them rustle through the leaves. They must have been ten or fifteen feet away, but that didn't phase me. I'm used to raccoons steeling my dogs food and also scavenging through the garbage, as well as opossums sitting on top of our fence while my dog barks uncontrollably at them. But anyways, it was interesting helping them in the wild compared to a backyard. After seeing the shadows of four or five of them, I went back to sleep.

The trip down the mountain was easy and also fun, again talking with Bree, Lindsay, and Misa. Other than the heat again, I was fine. Just sweaty after it was all done. After it was all said and done, it was nice to relax in a air-conditioned van and travel back down the mountain and back to campus.
